Anonymous ‘Tips for Jesus’ diner leaves $2,000 tip at San Francisco restaurant

People
Servers at a San Francisco restaurant received a nice surprise on Jan. 2 with a huge tip from a person behind the anonymous "Tips for Jesus" Instagram account.

The anonymous big tipper behind the Instagram account “Tips for Jesus” made sure a group of servers at a San Francisco restaurant rung in the new year with big smiles and fatter wallets.

The mystery diner struck on Jan. 2, leaving a $2,000 tip on a $50.74 bill at a Tacolicious location in San Francisco and posting the photo of the receipt on Instagram. A staff member at Tacolicious confirmed to the San Francisco Chronicle that the tip was real and was divided among the whole staff of servers.

The latest generosity from the anonymous diner (or diners) came after dropping a $10,000 tip on an $89.89 bill at the restaurant Crudo in Phoenix on Dec. 27. Since the inception of the “Tips for Jesus” Instagram account in September of 2013, more than $150,000 in tips have been left for unsuspecting servers across multiple U.S. cities and in Mexico.

The leader of the group of big tippers has been speculated to be former PayPal vice president Jack Selby, but no one has officially been revealed to be the one behind the generosity. The mystery diner spoke with San Francisco Magazine in February of 2014 in exchange for anonymity, saying he was one of about 10-plus diners involved in the movement, and that it did not have anything to do with religion but is instead focused on inspiring people to give back.
